Access Loch Broom

Balnoster Croft is in the crofting township of Ardcharnich.
Ardcharnich once was a thriving community of over eighty people but now only eight homes remain. There was once an old inn and a stable here and the main road between east and west ran through the crofts.
The croft has been in the family for many generations, since the census records. On the croft we have a few sheep, bee hives and chickens.
The area around Loch Broom has been inhabited for thousands of years, with evidence of ancient settlements and burial sites. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the region was significantly impacted by the Highland Clearances, which led to the displacement of many local families.
The village of Ullapool, located on the shores of Loch Broom, was established in 1788 by the British Fisheries Society as a herring port, reflecting the loch's historical importance to the local fishing industry. Today, Loch Broom is known for its natural beauty and continues to be a vital part of the cultural and economic life of the Scottish Highlands.
